A realistic, category-by-category monthly budget for international students in Austria in 2026 — rent, health insurance, groceries, transport and everything in between. Based on what my clients actually spend in Vienna, Graz, Linz, Klagenfurt and Innsbruck.

Monthly budget at a glance
Most students I work with land between €820–€1345 per month. Vienna and Innsbruck push you toward the top; Graz, Linz and Klagenfurt sit at the bottom. This also lines up with the €752 (under 24) and €1,360 (24+) proof-of-funds benchmarks the Austrian authorities use for the residence permit.

Rent (student dorm or shared flat)
€350–€550 / moStudent dorms in Vienna, Graz and Linz start around €350; a room in a shared flat (WG) is typically €400–€550.

Beyond monthly costs: tuition and one-offs
- Tuition at public universities: ~€726.72 per semester for non-EU students, plus a ~€24 student union (ÖH) fee.
- Residence permit fee: around €160 at the first application.
- Deposit for housing: two to three months of rent (€700–€1,500), refundable when you move out.
- Flights and initial setup: budget €400–€800 for the flight, bedding, kitchenware and a winter coat if you arrive in autumn.
Practical ways to keep costs down
- Apply to student dorms (OeAD, WIST, Home4Students) months before your semester starts — waitlists move slowly.
- Buy the semester or annual Klimaticket Ö Youth if you travel between cities — under €821/year and covers all public transport nationwide.
- Discount grocery chains (Hofer, Lidl, Penny) are 20–30% cheaper than Billa or Spar for the same basket.
- Register your Meldezettel within three days of moving — it unlocks bank accounts, contracts and the ÖH insurance rate.
- Look for Fachhochschulen and public universities outside Vienna if your program allows it — rent alone can save you €150–€200/month.
